I finally made it out to Heath ceramics in Sausalito a couple of weekends ago. I had a hard time controlling myself in their factory store. Their pieces are absolutely beautiful and so timeless. Edith Heath founded the workshop in the mid 1940’s and it’s still going strong. They believe strongly in local manufacturing and preserving their craft. Everything is still made on site in Sausalito. Their process is also more evironmentally friendly than most others in the industry. Edith developed her own clay body that only needs to be fired once (not twice like most) and at a lower temperature. All of their pieces are made to the finest quality standards and are meant to last forever. They’re sold in stores around the country and online, but the factory store is a particular treat.
They sell the pieces that didn’t meet their first-line standards at 30% off. I bought bud vases there and I couldn’t find a blemish on them. I can’t imagine what the retail quality standards must be. To all the designers out there, keep in mind that they don’t just make dinnerware. They’re also well known for their unique tiles. I’m just waiting for the right project to use them on.
